Hi! I am Shannon Gonter (she/her)

I am more than a therapist with some letters after my name. I am made up of lots of things - to share just a few…

I am a…

  • CIS straight white woman

  • wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, and colleague

  • mental wellness and human rights advocate

  • Kentucky transplant and happy to now call Louisville my home :)

  • natural connector and resource gatherer

  • person who loves systems, planning, and all things organization

  • podcast and audiobook lover

  • passionate entrepreneur, founder, and business consultant

  • person who enjoys being physically active

  • human who is committed to the healing process and will never stop learning about myself

Through my own path to wellness I have been able to grow and learn so much from all that is inside me. This is my hope for each and every one of you.

I am here to challenge the idea that therapy is for those who are sick, damaged, need fixing, aren’t strong enough to take care of life on their own, … - fill in the blank with any other stereotype counseling has gotten over the years. As a counselor - I work to make therapy a space of exploration with a joint knowing that we are here to connect - not judge, fix or critique how we have been operating up until now.

My Professional journey

I attended Florida State University for my undergraduate education and received a masters degree from University of Louisville in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am now a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) in the state of Kentucky.

To further my education after graduate school, I enrolled in a program in advanced psychotherapy. It was there that I deepened my knowledge in understanding the psyche and how one becomes their most authentic self.

I also am Level 1 trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), and am seeking certification and am continuing additional training with this model. This therapeutic model provides a framework for me to work with my clients in a curiosity lead and non pathological way with the goal being to deepen ones understanding of and build relationship with the various parts of self.

My approach to counseling is person centered, compassionate and focused on deepening the understanding of why we are the way we are. All is considered through a strength-based lens, with the goals of increasing connection to all aspects of ourselves, heightening self-awareness and ones understanding of how our bodies carry the past, current and future happenings of our lives. I am well-versed in evidenced based treatment models that address presenting problems such as anxiety, effects of traumatic experience, stress, burn out, and family/relationship concerns.

Counseling Approach

I am trained to assist you in becoming more aware of your internal thoughts, feelings and sensations and help you recognize patterns within yourself and in your life. This awareness will create new opportunities for learning more adaptive ways of relating to others, coping with and healing from life’s happenings.
