Full Professional Bio
Shannon Gonter is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor providing in-person counseling in Louisville & online counseling for adults located in the state of KY
I attended Florida State University for my undergraduate education and received a masters degree from University of Louisville in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am now a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) in the state of Kentucky.
To further my education after graduate school, I enrolled in a program in advanced psychotherapy. It was there that I deepened my knowledge in understanding the psyche and how one becomes their most authentic self.
I also am Level 1 trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), and am seeking certification and am continuing additional training with this model. This therapeutic model provides a framework for me to work with my clients in a curiosity lead and non pathological way with the goal being to deepen ones understanding of and build relationship with the various parts of self.
My approach to counseling is person centered, compassionate and focused on deepening the understanding of why we are the way we are. All is considered through a strength-based lens, with the goals of increasing connection to all aspects of ourselves, heightening self-awareness and ones understanding of how our bodies carry the past, current and future happenings of our lives. I am well-versed in evidenced based treatment models that address presenting problems such as anxiety, effects of traumatic experience, stress, burn out, and family/relationship concerns.
Specializations
I specialize in working with individuals aged 24-45 of all walks of life. Some presenting concerns that I most commonly work with are: stress, relationship issues, difficulty saying “no” to others, struggles with emotional expression and emotionally connecting to others, burn out, anger, intimacy issues, and others.
Counseling Approach
I am trained to assist you in becoming more aware of your internal thoughts, feelings and sensations and help you recognize patterns within yourself and in your life. This awareness will create new opportunities for learning more adaptive ways of relating to others, coping with and healing from life’s happenings.
Get started
Throughout the counseling process, you will start to feel more connected and capable of dealing with the happenings that life brings your way. You will feel more empowered to make decisions and will be more connected to your renewed sense of self and purpose.
Parenthood often shifts how we prioritize ourselves, making self-care feel impossible or even selfish. This blog encourages parents to reflect on these changes, explore pre-existing patterns, and challenge societal messages about putting themselves first. By carving out small moments daily to recharge and thrive, parents can better care for their families while honoring their own well-being.
A day retreat offers a unique opportunity for women to disconnect from the chaos of daily life and reconnect with their inner selves and others. The immediate benefits of mental detox, slowing down, and fostering deep connections are complemented by long-term gains in personal growth, stress management, and overall well-being. Moreover, the positive changes experienced by women who attend day retreats can have a ripple effect, enhancing their relationships at home and their performance at work. Investing in a day retreat is not just a gift to oneself but also a gift to one’s family, workplace, and community.
As children, we are often taught societal norms and expectations—how to behave, what to believe, and even how to feel. These boundaries are ingrained early on, shaping our understanding of emotions and how we should express them. Over time, we internalize these norms, sometimes to the detriment of our emotional well-being.
…BUT THERE IS ONE OUT THERE FOR YOU. I KNOW IT! I ALSO KNOW THAT IT CAN BE COMPLICATED TO FIND THE RIGHT PROVIDER MATCH FOR YOU - SO I AM HAPPY TO ASSIST YOU IN THAT.
The therapeutic process varies from person to person. Many presenting concerns can be dealt with in a brief period of time, but this is not always the case. Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to determine how long counseling will take.
